Community Policing Philosophy

As URI moves into a new era of policing intended to provide a safer community for all, we also commit to working toward a philosophy of policing that embraces the approach often referred to as community policing.  Community policing is typically described as the entire community, including police officers, recognizing that they share important community values, beliefs and goals.  This implies that officers are confident of community support for their decisions and actions; and citizens are confident that officers are addressing the public safety issues that concern the community.

We strive to be proactive through our various methods of patrol such as vehicle patrol, foot patrol and bicycle patrol. Our officers are involved in community relations projects such as the Rhody Outpost Food Drive; Cops, Kids, and Classrooms; the RI Special Olympics Torch Run Plunge; the Stuff-a-Cruiser Holiday Toy Drive; the Citizen’s Police Academy; and we offer a student internship program for those students interested in law enforcement.
