The Rhode Island Commission on Prejudice and Bias provides training to law enforcement agencies, facilitates educational trainings, and provides a conduit for reporting challenges individuals or organizations may experience in our Rhode Island communities. The commission was established by an act of the General Assembly. It reports to the RI governor. The commission is comprised of members of law enforcement, legislators, clergy, and community members.
Among its various activities, the commission works diligently to address issues of hate, from bullying in the classroom to hate crimes in our community. Hate crime generally refers to criminal acts which are seen to have been motivated by bias against one or more social groups. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters (hate mail).
