Overview

The International Studies and Diplomacy program is an interdependent, dual major program leading to a B.A. in International Studies (33 credits) and a B.A. in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Global Language & Area Studies with a concentration in Japanese. The program is designed to provide essential knowledge and skills in international politics, economics, cultures, and languages. Graduates are prepared for careers in foreign service, diplomacy, international non-governmental organizations, and other international careers.

Program Tracks

  • B.A. (Semester or Year-long Study Abroad)
  • B.A. + M.A.: An accelerated Five-Year B.A./M.A. program leading to a Master’s degree in International Relations

Study Abroad

Study abroad at an approved international institutional setting is a requirement for the ISD program. These abroad experiences will be language-learning focused but ISD students might also participate in international internships and direct exchange courses in substantive areas such as economics or political science.

Accelerated B.A. to M.A. (ABM) Option

Graduate degrees are often required for many Foreign Service jobs. ISD students may apply for the Accelerated B.A. to M.A. (ABM) Program in their junior year. Students in this ABM Program will receive the B.A. in their language and International Studies as well as an M.A. in International Relations. M.A. concentrations include: Diplomacy, International Development, and Global Peace Studies.

Program Learning Outcomes

1.1 Identify and describe the international political system as it applies to major actors.
1.2 Apply theories to explain international processes such as globalization, political violence, global poverty and income inequality, environmental cooperation, and global norms.
1.3 Identify and describe different economic systems and their interaction with the world economy (including trade, aid, financial flows, migration, technology transfer, and the operation of international organizations).


2.1 Demonstrate proficiency in a spoken language other than English at the Advanced-Low level or higher (according to the ACTFL guidelines) (Note dual degree component)
2.2 Demonstrate an advanced-level of international intercultural competence
2.3 Demonstrate intermediate-level skills in the analysis of cultures, societies, languages and/or cultural products.


3.1 Integrate and explain a contemporary global challenge utilizing knowledge from each of the three core areas.
