Funding agencies are now enforcing research security training prior to proposal submission. For several agencies (i.e. DOE, NSF, USDA), we have already needed to meet this requirement. To ensure our research community is prepared, and to ensure a smooth awarding process of your next federal proposal regardless of agency, URI has set a deadline of January 15, 2026 for completion of research security training.
Research security training is available through CITI:
CITI’s Research Security Training link: https://www.citiprogram.org/portal?site=912&stageID=481957
URI CITI Guidance website: https://web.uri.edu/research-admin/office-of-research-integrity/ori-training/citi-program/
PIs and senior personnel on proposals will need to complete this training in order for URI to submit your proposal to a federal sponsor.
Relevant Background:
Research security training requirements are part of the National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33) from 2021 to safeguard our research ecosystem and the CHIPS (Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors) and Science Act of 2022, Section 10634, codified the requirement for research security for federal research award personnel in public law.
Research security training helps to guard against several risks, including but not limited to the theft or misuse of research data, improper use of intellectual property, and the potential dissemination of untrustworthy scientific results. Research security training focuses on providing researchers with clear guidelines and effective strategies to protect against existing and emerging research security threats. Building a culture of research security protects research advances from misuse and misappropriation.
To ensure the research community is prepared, and to ensure a smooth awarding process of your next federal proposal, URI has set an internal training deadline of January 15, 2026.
