The Animal Care and Use Program at URI ensures the humane treatment of vertebrate animals used for research and educational purposes. The Program comprises the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), animal facilities, veterinary care, personnel training, emergency preparedness, and the occupational health program.
The IACUC is responsible for overseeing and evaluating the Animal Care and Use Program. The committee serves the public by ensuring compliance with all legal and ethical standards regarding the use of vertebrate animals in research and teaching at URI.
The IACUC reviews all research and teaching activities involving vertebrate animals; conducts semiannual evaluations of the animal care and use program and inspections of animal facilities; and reviews and addresses concerns involving animals in research and education. The IACUC is governed by the IACUC Governance and Operating Policy.
The Comparative Biology Resources Center (CBRC) houses animals used for research and teaching purposes and provides technical support and training for faculty, staff, and students.
