Research Occupational Health

In order to provide a safe and productive working environment for all faculty, staff, students, and volunteers, the university developed the Research Occupational Health Program. This program is operated jointly by the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), URI Health Services, and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).

Enrollment in the Research Occupational Health Program is required for all individuals, regardless of affiliation or status, who work directly with animals in research and / teaching environments. Individuals working with biohazardous materials are encouraged to enroll in the program.

The Research Occupational Health Program consists of:

  • Completion of species- and/or hazard-specific training. Learn more about Instituional Animal Care and Use Committee training.
  • Completion of the Health Questionnaire for Animal Research and Laboratory Facilities Access. Follow these instructions to complete the questionnaire:
    1. Login or register for the Patient Portal. You will find instructions on how to register/login to the patient portal on the portal home page. If you have any questions regarding portal access, contact Health Services at 401-874-2246.
    2. Save or print your URI Health Services immunization record from the portal (under the Immunization tab and click the ‘Print’ icon). You will need this to complete the questionnaire.
    3. Complete the Occupational Health Questionnaire located under Forms and titled Health Form for Animal and Research Facility Use.
  • Participation in risk-specific preventive measures (e.g., respiratory protection, immunizations, health monitoring) if recommended or required by URI Health Services.
