Microbial populations in the Southern Ocean can live in the open water, but they can also live in the ice itself, and today we collected ice samples so that we could check whether the diatoms ice and in the water were different. After getting our choice pieces of ice up on deck, we sealed them up in plastic bags, where they will sit in a cold room and melt very slowly over the next few days. After that, we can begin looking at the ice algae. If you look at the picture carefully, you just might see the 4 Adelie penguins that watched us sampling from the pack ice.
