Each Spring middle school SMILE students travel to URI’s Kingston Campus for an engineering challenge. During this challenge the students are divided into teams. The club members are mixed up across the teams so new connections and friends are made. The students spend Friday working in their teams to design, build, and test their solutions to the challenge problem given. Once the challenge is complete they are given recreation time in the pool and gym before heading down the road to the Holiday Inn for an overnight stay. In the morning the weekend is wrapped up with a campus tour and presentations from URI staff about planning for college. Finally winners of the challenge are announced and students head home to enjoy the rest of their weekend.
