Road to College Holiday Checklist
Happy Holidays from The SMILE Program! We hope that everyone is keeping warm this season. As the year winds down, it’s a perfect opportunity for families to review goals with their scholars to ensure they’re taking the right steps towards their future, whatever that looks like for them! For students seeking higher education, here are some things to keep in mind as we enter the new year.
End-of-quarter grades can reveal your strong suits, along with what you need to work on. Take time to review students’ grades with a teacher or guidance counsellor to decide what to focus on next and explore classes/activities that match their interests. For older students, be on the lookout for scholarship and grant opportunities to help fund your college experience, and remember to fill out your FAFSA! The SMILE website also provides some information on internship opportunities for middle and high school students on our Student Resources Page.
None of this has to be stressful! What’s most important is making few, small steps at a time towards the goal for our students. For additional assistance, be on the lookout for SMILE’s yearly January newsletter, which breaks down the road to college checklist from start to finish. Have a safe and fun holiday season! ❄️
Family Science Night
This fall, SMILE students across the state showcased their projects and club progress at their district-hosted Family Science Nights. There, SMILE clubs from all grade levels in the district gather with friends and family to enjoy a potluck-style dinner. Our SMILE students get the amazing opportunity to present their learning to members of their community, and attendees can explore and interact with some of the activities the students are working on in their clubs.
Below are some of the highlights from our Family Science Nights in Central Falls, Johnston, Newport, South Kingstown, West Warwick, and Woonsocket. For more media and info on each district’s event, check out our Facebook page or look out for our January newsletter!

RIRRC Central Landfill Field Trip
On November 21st, Broadrock Middle School SMILE students were excited to tour Johnston’s Central Landfill, the only landfill in Rhode Island! These middle schoolers received an in-person glimpse into what goes into keeping our environment clean and safe through a live demonstration of how waste is sorted, managed, and prepared for long-term storage. Students were able to see firsthand the scale of daily operations and ask questions about sustainability.
