Bachelor of Arts in Sociology
Experiential Learning
The University of Rhode Island has a well-developed internship and experiential learning program, and many of our sociology students have taken advantage of these opportunities. In recent years students have interned at agencies such as:
- Children’s Friend and Service
- Domestic Violence Resource Center
- Feinstein Center for a Hunger-Free America
- Narragansett Police Department
- Providence Police Department
- Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office
- Rhode Island Department of Corrections
- Rhode Island Public Defender’s Office
- Rhode Island State Police
For more information about these and other programs check out the Center for Career and Experiential Education.
Fieldwork
You’ll have the opportunity to combine course work in sociology with a field experience in Mexico or Southern Italy. Students in these programs learn about sustainable agricultural practices from farmers in these areas. These courses are coordinated by professor Rosaria Pisa.
Humanitarian Work
Over the last several years, many of our students have expressed interest in improving the common good through work in various non-governmental organizations (NGOs)—environmental protection, poverty alleviation, health care, rehabilitation, peace and justice, and many more. Our department is exploring several ways to help students interested in this work become well-prepared to pursue it.
If you are interested in additional possibilities for this sort of work, either paid, volunteer, or internship, take a look at idealist.org for a wide selection of domestic and international opportunities.
