Historical Note: 1922-1968

Series I: Governor’s Office: Correspondence, 1963, 1965, 1966-68.

This series consists of correspondence received by and sent from the Governor’s Office. It contains letters written in response to constituents’ questions about bills of interest to them and other issues involving constituents, such as roads built through their property or requests for aid from the governor. It also contains responses to requests for information—often from children or students wanting information about Rhode Island. Other correspondence may be found in the Subject File, as well as in the Campaign subgroup.

Series II: Bound Chronological File, 1963-1968.

This series contains the carbon copies of all the letters sent out by the Governor’s Office. It is arranged alphabetically within a day and chronologically by that date.  Chafee’s staff bound these carbon copies into paper folders. This series serves as an index to the Correspondence File

Series III: “Incoming Mail” Logs, 1965-1968.

This series consists of a log that the Governor’s Office staff kept of all the mail that was received by the office. A brief description of the contents of the letter is supplied along with the correspondent’s name, date of letter, and date of receipt.

Series IV: Social and Appointments File, 1965-1968.

The Social File was kept by Mrs. Elisabeth (Betty) A. Buxton, Chafee’s Appointment Secretary. She wrote letters in response to invitations, whether accepted or regretted, and letters of appreciation which were written following an event to thank the organizers. This series includes letters of invitation, letters accepting or regretting invitations, and letters of appreciation.

Series V:  Subject File, 1962-1968.

This series contains information, publications, and correspondence on particular topics. These topics may include pamphlets, publications, fact sheets, plans, mimeographed material, handwritten notes by Chafee and others, folders containing telephone memoranda and transmittals of acts. The File is arranged according to subject and filed alphabetically with cross references where applicable.

Series Vl: Speeches/Addresses, 1962-1968.

This series contains speeches, addresses, and drafts and fragments of those speeches and addresses.  Many of these speeches were given during a campaign year and information concerning them may be found in the campaign series of the correct year.  Chafee made numerous addresses on television and radio, as well, and the typescripts of those talks are filed in this series, as well. Many of the films of those talks were kept and may be found in the series entitled, Other Format.

Series VII: Legislative Bills, 1966.

This series consists of bills that passed through the House and Senate of the Rhode Island Assembly for the first half of 1966. These bills are stored in the folders originally given to them by Chafee’s staff.
