Biography

Dr. Nathan Vinhateiro is the Assistant Director of the Coastal Institute (CI) at the University of Rhode Island. In this role, he works to promote and support interdisciplinary coastal research at the University and among regional collaboratives convened through the CI. He also serves as the chair of the RI Environmental Monitoring Collaborative and is a member of the coordination team for Rhode Island’s Scientific Support for Environmental Emergency Response (SSEER) network. Prior to joining the Coastal Institute, Vinhateiro worked as a Senior Scientist at RPS Ocean Science, where he managed consulting projects addressing complex coastal issues such as flooding, erosion, and water quality. He also developed interactive applications to enable visualization and analysis of environmental data. He received a Ph.D. from URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography in 2012, where his research examined the impact of storms and sea level rise on barrier beach shorelines. While at URI he was awarded a fellowship with NSF’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program.

As a co-lead of the RTC, Vinhateiro develops outreach material that ensure STEEP’s scientific accomplishments are accessible to outside research groups, state and federal agencies, and the general public.
