Presentation Title:
Advancing Cosmetics Safety Assessment: Alternative Skin Models for In Vitro Permeation Testing

Join us for an engaging seminar featuring Dr. Luísa Camacho, Deputy Director of the Division of Biochemical Toxicology at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR).

Dr. Camacho will provide an insightful overview of her research on alternative skin models for in vitro permeation testing, including:

  • A brief introduction to FDA’s NCTR.
  • The biology of skin and methodologies for evaluating compound permeation.
  • Key findings and their contribution to the FDA’s regulatory mission.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Luísa Camacho holds a distinguished career in toxicological research. She earned her BS in Applied Plant Biology and a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. After postdoctoral research at the University of Durham and the University of Oxford, she joined FDA’s NCTR in 2007.

Her research focuses on the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of FDA-regulated products, including compounds such as bisphenol A, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and cannabidiol. More recently, Dr. Camacho has spearheaded efforts to evaluate alternative skin models for predicting dermal absorption and irritation.

Dr. Camacho is a prolific author with over 40 peer-reviewed publications and serves as an expert in international working groups, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
