TD Alumna, Rep. Shelby Maldando Is the Recipient of the 2017 College Crusade Distinguished Alumni Award

The Talent Development Program would like to congratulate Rep. Shelby Maldonado, of Central Falls, for being the recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award from The College Crusade of Rhode Island. At their annual Believe Breakfast, this award recognizes an alum who has had exemplary college and early career success as well as one who demonstrated a commitment to community. The Believe Breakfast is annual event that celebrates the dedication of educators, state policymakers, business leaders, philanthropic organizations, community agencies, and families who support the post-secondary success of Rhode Island’s young people.

Rep. Shelby Maldonado serves as the second vice-chairwoman of the Committee on Municipal Government and is a member of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare. She is also co-chairwoman of the Legislative Black and Latino Caucus.
Shelby serves as chairwoman of a special legislative commission to study the Low and Moderate Income Housing Act and its compliance by cities and towns. Shelby was also one of 48 state leaders from across the nation selected for the prestigious Henry Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by the Council of State Governments in 2016. During her first legislative session in 2015, Shelby championed civil rights legislation for women, sponsoring a bill that prohibits employers from discriminating against, and failing to provide reasonable accommodations for, employees due to pregnancy or medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth.

Prior to her election to the House of Representatives, Shelby was a member of the Central Falls City Council. Before that, she served in the Peace Corps in Africa and was a High School Advisor for The College Crusade. She is a graduate of Central Falls High School and earned a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Communications from the University of Rhode Island through TD in 2009.
