Bethany Schaarschmidt

Biography

I was born and raised in Rhode Island and am proud to be an active URI alum. I graduated in 1991 with my bachelor’s degree in biology and always felt like URI was my home. In 2006, I earned my master’s degree in Nutritional Biochemistry and am currently working on my doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Innovation. Education did not come easy for me – my first semester here at URI was a trainwreck – not because I wasn’t smart enough, but because I didn’t have the right tools in my toolbox to be successful. Once I learned how to learn with a mentor, I was finally able to see my own potential and understood firsthand the importance of empowering people. Each time I had the opportunity to come to campus, I always knew I wanted to give back to the URI community; I finally found myself here as a staff member, and I look forward to empowering others.

I have worked in many different fields, from oceanography to healthcare. By far, the most rewarding thing I have done has been to be a part of empowering students in higher education. I have many years of experience from all perspectives in higher education – I have worn the hat of a student, faculty, advisor, and administrator, and am excited to have finally landed with the Talent Development Team. I look forward to using my student success expertise to help empower our scholars!
