Planning is Everything
Are you a current URI student planning to take a course at another college or university? Are you an incoming student unsure how your credits will transfer?
Whether you’re completing a summer class at home, studying abroad, or catching up on credits online, it’s important to follow the proper steps so your credits transfer to URI correctly and count toward your degree.
Evaluation Essentials
Transfer Equivalency System (TES)
Check Course Transferability
Use the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) Public View to see if your course has already been reviewed. If it’s not listed, don’t worry – URI faculty will evaluate upon receipt of an official transcript. Transferology is another tool to use – search for your prior school in the database to see all of the courses previously approved for transfer.
Get prior approval
Always confirm with your academic advisor and, if required, your dean’s office, to verify the course will fulfill your degree (major) or General Education requirements. Use the Prior Approval for Off-Campus Study form.
Consider timing and sequence
If you’re taking a course that builds on previous URI coursework (like languages, lab sciences, or math), make sure the content and credits align properly before enrolling.
Official Transcripts and Evaluation
After You Complete the Course:
Once the course is complete and your final grade has posted, request your official transcript. You will need to initiate the process to send an official transcript to URI. Transfer credit evaluations are generally completed within 21 days. Please be patient, monitor your email address(es) and/or refresh your transfer credit report.
There are two options for sending official transcripts:

Electronic Delivery (preferred & fastest method):
admission@uri.edu or transferadmission@uri.edu
OR
via US Mail to:
Office of Admission
University of Rhode Island – Newman Hall
14 Upper College Road; Kingston, RI 02881
Transcripts are processed in the order received. It may take several weeks for the credits to be received, evaluated, and posted.
AP, IB, JST – Electronic Only!
All Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Joint Services Transcripts (JST) can only be sent electronically to URI. Visit the following links for more information: Standardized Exams, Military Experience, Certifications & Examinations, and Credit for Life Experience (Portfolio).
Track Your Credits
After processing, you can view your results in eCampus → Self Service → Student Center → Transfer Credit Report. Check back periodically for updates or contact your college advising office if it hasn’t posted after a few weeks.

JAA and JAA Discount
Transfer Student Success (TSS) is responsible for administering the Joint Admissions Agreement (JAA) Tuition Discount Policy at the University of Rhode Island.
About JAA
URI partners with CCRI to offer pathways for associate degrees t0 baccalaureate degrees, which is highlighted by our Joint Admission Agreement (JAA) program. Students interested in transferring to URI through the JAA should visit the CCRI-URI JAA Admission Pathways page for full eligibility requirements and program details. Strict adherence to the program plan policy post by CCRI and URI apply. Questions about the program should be directed to transferadmission@uri.edu.
About JAA Tuition Discount
Through the JAA program, eligible Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) graduates may receive a tuition discount of up to 30% upon transferring to URI, based on their final CCRI GPA: 10% for a GPA of 3.00–3.24, 20% for 3.25–3.49, and 30% for 3.50 or higher. The discount applies only to fall and spring semester tuition and is valid for a maximum of six consecutive fall/spring semesters, regardless of full-time or part-time enrollment status. Winter J-Term and Summer Sessions are not included.
To remain eligible, students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at URI and continue to follow their approved JAA transition plan. Students may not change their primary major once enrolled under JAA; however, they may add a second major or minor as long as the original JAA plan remains active and unchanged. Failure to meet these requirements or GPA standards will result in permanent loss of the discount. Per the State of Rhode Island JAA policy, there is no appeal process once eligibility for the discount is lost.
Students with questions regarding their JAA tuition discount or current status should contact John Rooney.
Transfer Policies
Transfer Grades:
- “C” or Higher: You must earn a C (2.0) or higher for the course to be eligible for transfer credit.
- No repeats: Courses may not duplicate those you already earned or have transfer credit for at URI. Additionally, you can not transfer courses for use towards the Second Grade Option Policy.
- Pass/Fail: Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory courses are generally not transferable unless an letter grade is officially recorded. There are some exceptions which you can discuss with your dean’s office or TSS.
- How it will transfer?: Most transfer credits will post with a URI grade of “T” and are not calculated in your URI GPA. NOTE: Some programs may look at the original grade if there are secondary admission requirements at URI. Approved coursework will transfer to URI as major, general education, elective, or a combination thereof, depending on your program.
Important Academic Rules
- Prior Approval for Off-Campus Study: All students with intentions of transferring credits earned elsewhere must complete the Prior Approval for Off-Campus Study form.
- Residency requirements: URI degrees require have varying amounts of accepted transfer credit (typically by college), minimum number of credits – including upper and level courses, % of degree, # of major credits to be completed at URI, etc. Check with your dean’s office or TSS before taking courses elsewhere!
- Course level and credit hours: Make sure the course level (e.g., 100-, 200-, 300-level) and number of credits are comparable to URI’s standards. The Prior Approval for Off-Campus Study form becomes especially important to earn 300 and 400 level transfer credits and major credit.
- Term format: Accelerated, online, and hybrid courses may transfer to URI, provided they meet standard contact-hour and learning outcome requirements. Final acceptance of transfer credit is subject to departmental review and university transfer credit policies.
- Study Abroad or Exchange: Courses through approved URI programs are typically pre-evaluated but still require a final official transcript submission.
- Financial Aid: If you’re using aid or scholarships, speak with Enrollment Services to understand how taking courses elsewhere could affect your eligibility.
Credit for Prior Learning
If you’ve earned college-level knowledge through work experience, military service, or professional training, you may be eligible for additional credit through URI’s Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) process.
