Metcalf Institute has opening for summer intern
The Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, based at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography has an opening for a URI undergraduate for a credit-based summer communications internship.
The position requires 10-20 hours per week according to the credits needed and hours are flexible. The position starts May 21.
The Metcalf Institute Communications Intern will assist the staff in producing and distributing communications with stakeholders, including the following tasks: draft and execute web and social media updates; maintain contact with applicants and alumni; assist with program promotion; produce photo galleries for Metcalf programs; assist in monitoring environmental issues in connection with Metcalf programs; draft outreach and correspondence for various Metcalf Institute audiences; compile program survey data in MS Excel; and perform other communications duties as needed. The ideal intern will also assist with videography for web videos.
The intern will learn and develop applied marketing, outreach and communication skills; interact with professional journalists; practice strategic social media and multimedia skills; and learn how communication training is designed and implemented in a science-based setting.
The successful intern may be eligible for employment with Metcalf Institute after completion of credit hours.
Qualifications: The Metcalf Communications Intern must be computer literate (Metcalf is an all-Mac office); have strong, demonstrable written and interpersonal communication skills; have ability to multitask and learn quickly; have ability to work independently and with a team; have working knowledge of social media; be detail-oriented; and must have own transportation. The ideal Intern will have knowledge of environmental issues and an appreciation for the importance of public understanding of science. The ideal Intern will attend Metcalf Institute’s Annual Workshop for Journalists part-time as videographer.
Preferred skills: Experience with web content management systems, database, and proof-reading. Experience with video production, including shooting and editing.
