URI Detailed Definitions

Note: Pets are not allowed in any URI building, classroom, residential area, or laboratory, (including URI Farms, research areas, etc.)

Animal Breed Purpose Limitations
Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Any breed of pet  appropriate for an indoor environment (certain animals may be excluded). Is not a specifically trained  “working animal”  but provides comfort or emotional support to the student resident in HRL facilities; documentation must substantiate animal as essential for equal opportunity. Allowed ONLY in residential areas and public areas of campus grounds; not allowed in the classroom or other buildings and facilities; must be controlled at all times.
Certified Service Animal (Service Dog) Dog
(occasionally a miniature horse)
A working dog, specifically trained to provide disability-related function (i.e. seeing-eye dog for person who is blind) Allowed to accompany user in all activities and campus environments where students are allowed; must be controlled at all times.  May be excluded from certain environments.
Therapy Animal Dog A working dog, trained to provide therapeutic service during planned sessions or times. Sessions are supervised by clinical personnel. Non-residential; not allowed in campus facilities during non-therapy times.
