Study Abroad

Race and Ethnicity

Some countries have one dominant racial or ethnic group while other countries have various racial and ethnic groups. Your racial and ethnic background can play a role in how others perceive you and interact with you while abroad. These perceptions and interactions may be different from what is common for you in the United States. Some students may find themselves in a country where they are the racial minority for the first time while others find themselves as the racial majority. Understanding how your racial and ethnic background is perceived in another country may influence your experience abroad.

Things to Consider

  • What is the dominant racial and ethnic identity in the country I intend to study in?
  • How does this country view certain racial and ethnic groups?
  • Are there stereotypes or discriminatory factors that are based on race and ethnicity?
  • Will I stand out and if so, how comfortable am I with standing out?
