Study Abroad Scholarships

This is not an exhaustive list and many study abroad programs have established scholarships not indicated below. Program participants should always ask the representatives of their study abroad program about student scholarships.

  • The scholarships below are available to URI students and administered by the Office of International Education.

    Academic Programs International (API) Affiliate Scholarship

    Awarded to URI students participating on an API program. Award amount: $500-$1000. Merit and need based scholarships. Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPA.

    Deadline: March 1 (summer); May 1 (fall or academic year); October 1 (spring)

    Accademia Italiana Affiliate Scholarship

    Awarded to URI students participating on an Accademia Italiana semester program. Award amount: $600. Merit and need based scholarships. Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPA.

    CIEE/URI SCHOLARSHIP – Major Specific Awards for Study Abroad

    Arabic Language – Health Studies – Environmental Studies – Communications, Journalism & New Media

    CIEE, a URI-affiliated program, recently announced the CIEE/URI Scholarship – Major Specific Awards for Study Abroad, which are designed to help URI students majoring in Arabic Language; Health Studies (including Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health); Communications, Journalism & New Media; or Environmental Studies participate on an academic experience overseas. These scholarships are available for CIEE study abroad participants admitted to a summer or fall 2015 program. Awards are intended to support CIEE and URI’s goal of providing access to students who are economically challenged, from diverse backgrounds, or academic fields of study historically underrepresented in study abroad participation.

    Summer 2015 – multiple $500 – $1,000 grants
    Fall 2015 – multiple $1,000 – $2,500 grants

    Denmark’s International Study (DIS) Affiliate Scholarship

    For all URI students participating on a DIS Program. Award amount: $2,000 academic semester, $300 summer program. Automatic fee reduction upon admission to program.

    Beginning with the Fall of 2015:

    Each URI student will receive an institutional discount from DIS programs in the following increments:

    $4,000 per semester
    $300 per 3-week summer course
    $400 per 4-week summer course
    $750 per 7-week Architecture & Design program

    The discounts will be deducted from the tuition that appears on each participants e-Campus bill for term they study abroad with DIS.

    National Student Exchange Scholarship

    Open to students participating in the National Student Exchange program. Students must have demonstrated financial need. One scholarship is available, $500.

    Phi Eta Sigma Study Abroad

    Phi Eta Sigma member; current undergraduate student; demonstrated financial need; willing to share study abroad experience with other Phi Eta Sigma members.

    Sky Pardee Memorial Scholarship

    Only awarded to URI student participating on the AIFS Richmond University, London semester program. Award amount: Varies. Merit and need based scholarships. Preference given to a URI student who is a resident of Maine.

    Deadline: May 1 (fall or academic year); October 1 (spring)

    URI Faculty-Led Program Scholarship

    Awarded to URI students participating in a URI Faculty-Led Winter J-term, Spring or Summer Program.

    Application: Available Now

    Deadline: November 1 (Winter J-term Program); December 1 (Spring Program); April 1 (Summer Program)

  • Several URI affiliated study abroad programs provide scholarship opportunities for students participating in their programs. Students must apply directly to the program provider.

    American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)

    Scholarship opportunities available for AIFS participants. Applicants should apply directly to AIFS.

    Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE)

    Scholarship opportunities available for CIEE participants. Applicants should apply directly to CIEE.

    Denmark’s International Study Program (DIS)

    SEA Semester

    Scholarship opportunities available for SEA Semester participants. Applicants should apply directly to SEA Semester.

    The Education Abroad Network (TEAN)

    Scholarship opportunities available for TEAN participants. Applicants should apply directly to TEAN.

  • There are private organizations in the region that coordinate international study scholarships for students. Students would need to apply directly to the scholarship coordinators.

    Beatrice S. Demers Foreign Language Fellows Program

    Rhode Island residents and anyone who is a student at a Rhode Island college or university who wishes to pursue foreign language study. Preference will be given to applicants from the University of Rhode Island who meet qualifications.

    Swedish Women’s Educational Association International, (SWEA) – Boston Chapter

    Awards for well-merited female undergraduate students at a New England university for studies in Sweden.

  • Boren Awards for International Study

    Supports graduate and undergraduate students studying languages, cultures and world areas critical to U.S. interests.

    Critical Language Scholarship Program

    A program of United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2011. The selection process will be administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) with awards approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The CLS Program will be administered by CAORC and the American Councils for International Education.


    DAAD offers scholarships to students and scholars for study and research opportunities in Germany.

    DiversityAbroad.Com Partner Scholarships has partnered with several organizations to offer study abroad grants and scholarships. Multiple scholarships and grants are available.

    Gilman Scholarship

    The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

    IIEPassport Study Abroad Funding

    Hosted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), this web directory features detailed descriptions of hundreds of study abroad scholarships, fellowships, grants, and paid internships for U.S. undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students, and professionals.

    Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Grant

    Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by study abroad. Multiple $1,000 grants are available.

    Rotary International

    Ambassadorial scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.
