Chris Molinski from Public Safety and Rachel Dunham from Violence Prevention & Advocacy Services showcase the tee shirts for Peace Day coming up on Thursday, Sept. 21, marking the annual International Day of Peace as designated by the United Nations. This is a worldwide day promoting peace. All member nations have agreed to a UN resolution to cease all war, combat, and all forms of violence on that day. The URI Center for Nonviolence & Peace studies along with other campus and community organizations will be on the Quad from 10AM – 3PM to promote peace and celebrate with several fun activities.
The URI Day of Peace festivities will include the forming of a giant human peace sign, (gather at 12:45, photo at 1:00) with an aerial photo and free souvenir tee shirts for the first 300 participants. Throughout the day tables, flag-making fabric squares, and multicolored markers will be set up for people to stop by and spend a few minutes creating their own person peace flag.
At 1:30, the URI ukelele peace orchestra will be performing on the Quad. Everyone is invited to bring a uke, a guitar, or any other favorite instrument to join in making music for peace.
The day will conclude with a Candlelight Vigil Thursday evening at 7PM to remember and honor all victims of violence as well as those who have given their lives for the cause of peace.
Monday-Friday of that week (Sept. 18-22) as part of the Day of Peace celebration, seven Tibetan Buddhist monks will be on campus in the Memorial Student Union Lounge constructing a compassion mandala using an ancient sand painting technique. These monks travel and tour on behalf of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and represent the people of Tibet suffering under the occupation and harsh oppressive conditions imposed by the Chinese government and military since 1959.
We hope you will join us in one or more of these activities and stand with the world community for peace on earth.
