Biography
Kate Jelinek, C.P.A., Ph.D. is an associate professor of accounting at the University of Rhode Island. She has taught Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Introductory Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting in the undergraduate program as well as Advanced Auditing in the MS program. She has won several teaching awards, including the Dean’s CBA Outstanding New Teacher Award, the Beta Gamma Sigma Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Award. Professor Jelinek is currently the University’s faculty advisor for Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting National Honor Society.
Professor Jelinek’s research focuses on corporate governance, and includes topics such as auditor behavior, structure and protocol at accounting organizations and the effect of agency costs on earnings management. She has earned research awards including the “Best Education Paper Award” from the Northeast Region Meeting of the American Accounting Association (2018) and the “Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence—Outstanding Paper Award” (2009). Her work has been published in various journals including Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accounting Education, International Journal of Managerial Finance, Business Horizons, and The CPA Journal. Prior to earning her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, Professor Jelinek graduated with a B.S. in accounting from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and worked as a senior assurance consultant in Ernst & Young’s retail, distribution and manufacturing (RDM) line of business out of the firm’s Boston office.
