The town of Charlestown is collaborating with University of Rhode Island wastewater management experts in a pilot project to develop a comprehensive approach to reducing the amount of nitrogen from septic systems that enters the groundwater.

Working in collaboration with URI Oceanography Professor Jeremy Collie and graduate student Shaina Harkins, Riendeau is discovering that Narragansett Bay has experienced an increase in biodiversity in recent years as the water has become cleaner and warmer.

A URI senior marine biology major at the University of Rhode Island spent the last five months conducting research on sharks and stingrays through a pilot program supported by the National Geographic Society.

“Our Marine Biology Program is a destination major,” said Professor Jacqueline Webb, the George and Barbara Young Chair in Biology and director of the program. “It’s what draws students to the University, and its popularity is mostly developed through word of mouth”.

Seven undergraduate students at the University of Rhode Island have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and supports study or internships abroad.
