FAVS students come in second in regional competition

Once again, a group of 32 students in the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Science scored extremely well in the annual Northeast Students Affiliate (NESA) competition, coming in second in a field of nine institutions.
URI came in second overall to perennial animal science powerhouse, Penn State, which has a far larger program than URI’s.
Dr. Katherine Petersson, who along with Fred Launer, lecturer, travelled to Rutgers University with the students for the competition, said they were proud of the showing the students made against some stiff competition,.
The students spent weeks in preparation for the competition which involves such categories as livestock judging, a quiz bowl and a paper presentation.
In the livestock judging, Anthony Correnti came in second in the individual category and URI teams F and C came in fifth and tenth respectively.
In the paper presentation, Erica Nadeau came in first and James Schwerdtfeger came in second.
In the quiz bowl, URI Team C came in tenth and teams A and B came in thirteenth and fifteenth respectively.

Team D—Angela Cabral, Anthony Correnti, Melissa Mackenzie, Abigail Searle.
Team E—Evan Pagano, Kayla Roll, Christopher Rueckel, Allison Unger.
Team F—Nicole Adroved, Hannah Kaplan, Glenda Pereira, Thomas Ruckert.
Team G—Katherine Alworth, Anthony Cammarano, Alyssa Mirmina, Lena Shubina
Team H—Jessica McKevitt, Jess Ryder, James Schwerdtfeger, Erica Sebastyan.
