Jane Picciotti BA, 2000, takes a personal interest in the children who attend Highlander Charter School.
The Distinguished Achievement Awards at URI honor those who personify the University’s tradition of excellence in achievement, leadership, and service.
The Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies (formerly CCE) also has a long history of educating teachers to impart knowledge and skills to new generations of students, and the newly established School of Professional and Continuing Studies is well-poised to develop leaders and mentors in the workplace.
Our most recent recipient is Jane Picciotti, Class of 2000, who received a B.A. in early childhood education from the School of Education. Soon after graduation, she secured a teaching position at the Highlander Charter School in Providence.
Recognizing her excellent organizational and leadership abilities, Jane was advanced to Assistant Head of School.
It is important to note that as an educator, Jane was never one to simply take a professional interest in her students and their families. She often volunteered her personal time to make home visits during the summer months. These days, she has an open-door policy and seeks to learn all she can about each child, his or her family, and the local community. It is no wonder the waiting list to attend Highlander currently includes over 1,000 children.
Jane has exemplified the THINK BIG spirit of URI, and the College, by being an advocate for equitable academic opportunities for all learners regardless of gender, race, religion, or wealth. These efforts are highlighted in her support of: URI’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and URI’s Diversity Week; the College’s Kappa Delta Pi officers; and, Highlander’s Student and Parent Literacy Nights and Multicultural Storytelling Fairs.
As the Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies expands its academic and professional development offerings to include digital learning systems, organizational management and analysis, and leadership
innovation, there is no doubt that current and future students can learn from this an outstanding alumna. Jane Picciotti has earned high honors for her continued, and distinguished, service to the College and to URI.
