The School of Education offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs in addition to certification extension programs. All University of Rhode teacher education programs are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).

Undergraduate Programs

Elementary Education (B.A.)
The B.A. in Elementary Education offers a dual degree in Elementary Education and an Arts and Sciences specialization, along with an initial teaching certificate for grades 1-6.

Secondary Education (B.A.)
The B.A. in Secondary Education leads to a dual degree in Secondary Education with an academic specialization in biology, chemistry, general science, physics, English, modern languages, social studies, history, or math, with an initial teaching certificate for grades 7-12 in the area of specialization.

Shared Programs

The School of Education handles teacher certification for the following programs:

Early Childhood Education (B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies)
This program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies with teaching certification for preschool through grade 2.

Health and Physical Education (B.S. in Kinesiology)
This program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with teaching certification in K-12 physical education.

Music Education (Bachelor of Music)
This program leads to a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degree with teaching certification in K-12 music.

Graduate Programs

Education (M.A.)
This program is designed for teachers who have already been certified in elementary or secondary education as part of their undergraduate degree, and want to obtain a master’s degree.

Areas of specialization:

Education (M.A. with Teacher Certification Program)
This program allows individuals who have an undergraduate degree, in an area other than elementary or secondary education, to obtain their teacher certification along with their master’s degree.

Areas of specialization:

Education (Ph.D.)
This joint program offered by URI and Rhode Island College is designed to prepare educational leaders for the improvement of public schools. Most entering students already have a master’s degree in education or a related field.

Special Education (M.A.)
This program offers Rhode Island special education certification in the area of mild/moderate disabilities at the elementary level (grades 1-6) or at the secondary level (grades 7-12).

Early Childhood Education (Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program)
This program is for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree. It is a fully accredited certification program that prepares students to teach preschool to second grade.

Certification Extensions

English as a Second Language (ESL) or Dual Language Immersion (DLI)
For teachers who are certified in early childhood, elementary, or a secondary content area, or are enrolled in a URI-approved teacher education program in one of these certification areas.

Middle Grades
The middle level certification extension is valid for service in grades 5-8 in any Rhode Island middle, elementary, or junior high school in the content areas of mathematics, English, science, social studies, or world languages.
