The University of Rhode Island College of Health Sciences aims to improve the overall health of the campus community and beyond. The College offers a range of health services and clinics to members of the community to help heal body and mind.
University Physical Therapy
The URI Physical Therapy Department offers a full-service outpatient physical therapy clinic for the treatment of various conditions including:
- Pre- and post-surgical care
- Sports rehabilitation
- Motor vehicle and work-related injuries
- Postural syndromes and overuse injuries
- Therapy for sprains, strains and fractures
The clinic is staffed by licensed Physical Therapy Department faculty with advanced training in orthopedic and neurologic rehabilitation. Students are involved in the clinic in both voluntary and formal classroom-related experiences. Services are available to URI students, faculty and staff members. The clinic participates with most insurance programs, except Medicare and Medicaid.

Speech and Hearing Centers
The Communicative Disorders Department offers a range of speech-language and hearing services to clients of all ages, who receive treatment from qualified professionals in speech-language pathology and audiology, with the assistance of graduate students in training. The centers offer:
- Hearing services for children and adults, including comprehensive hearing evaluations, complete hearing aid services and aural rehabilitation, featuring the most advanced technology available.
- Speech and language evaluation and therapy for children and adults, including treatment for articulation/phonology disorders, oral and written language disorders, stuttering and voice disorders.
- Adult Neurogenic Clinic, offering speech, language and cognitive testing and treatment for adults with neurological disorders caused by stroke or traumatic brain injury.
- Specialty groups and workshops for clients with such conditions as Parkinson’s Disease, aphasia and acquired brain injury.
The Kingston Speech and Hearing Centers are located in Independence Square, 25 W. Independence Way. Fees for clinical services are based on a client’s ability to pay, and most major insurance plans are accepted. Couple and Family Therapy Clinic
The URI Human Development and Family Studies Department offers confidential relationship enhancement and counseling sessions for families of all shapes and sizes. Clinical services are supervised by licensed URI faculty members, who can address such issues as:
- Family stress or conflict
- Acting-out children
- Sibling aggression
- Couples conflict
- Relationship enhancement
- Improving the parent-child relationship
The clinic also provides counseling for family transitions, including pre-marital, divorce or separation, family blending, and birth, death or relocation. The clinic is open to the entire campus community, and beyond. An accredited Child Development Center, offering early childhood education programs for children ages three to five years, is also available. Psychological Consultation Center
The Psychological Consultation Center offers a wide range of outpatient services, including individual and family therapy, brief consultation and psychoeducation, as well as psychological, cognitive and learning assessment services. Doctoral level graduate students are supervised by licensed clinical psychologists and offer services to help treat depression, anxiety, sleep concerns, grief and loss, trauma and a variety of other issues. Therapy services aim to help clients:
- Better understand how thoughts and feelings can impact behavior
- Improve stress management/coping
- Develop healthy lifestyle habits
- Better manage individual health-related problems and promote healthy behaviors
- Maximize individual strengths and build on skills and capabilities
- Attend to the important issue of culture and intersecting identities and their impact on individual functioning and wellbeing.
The clinic offers a specialty program for children with anxiety. The Child Anxiety Program offers psychological evaluations, treatment solutions and psychoeducational opportunities. The program aims to give clients a better understanding of child anxiety, raise public awareness of childhood anxiety disorders and provide new professionals the training necessary to treat such issues
The Psychological Consultation Center is located in Suite 100 of the Chafee Social Science building on the Kingston campus. Human Performance Laboratory
The URI Department of Kinesiology offers health and physical fitness testing services for university students and the general public. Services include:
- Muscle fitness — Advanced equipment, including the Biodex System 4 Pro and Wingate Cycle, measures muscular strength, anaerobic power and rate of fatigue.
- Body composition — Test results include body fat percentage, hydration levels, health classification, and specific analysis of arms, legs and trunk.
- VO2 Submaximal and Max — VO2Max is the best measure of cardiovascular fitness. The test can be performed on a cycle or treadmill.
- Lactate threshold — Popular among competitive distance runners, the tests can help design an effective training regimen.
- Resting metabolic rate — Reflects the number of calories burned at rest to help design an exercise program.

URI Child Development Centers
The URI Child Development Center offers a high-quality, accredited year-round preschool program with sites in both Kingston and Providence. Each center enrolls a maximum of 30-32 children in their two classrooms. The spacious environment gives children opportunities to interact with a variety of different children and materials based on individual interests and learn styles.
