M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology
Admission
Apply online through the CSDCAS portal. The application deadline for Fall admission is January 15th. The M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology program at URI typically accepts between 20 and 25 students each year.
Application Fees
Two required application fees must be paid prior to review of materials by the Admissions Committee:
- to CSDCAS;
- to the URI Graduate School: A $65 USD non-refundable application processing fee. We recommend you pay this as soon as possible to avoid forgetting this important step in the process.
Criteria
To be competitive for the acceptance into the M.S. program, you’ll need the following:
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, demonstrating a solid record of academic performance in coursework.
- A personal statement describing EITHER:
- a challenge you have had in your life and how your reaction to that challenge has helped prepare you for graduate school; OR
- a project or responsibility you took on that fostered skills relevant to your graduate career.
- Three letters of recommendation, preferably including:
- two letters from persons who can discuss your past academic work and your potential to succeed at graduate-level work;
- one letter from an individual who can comment on your interpersonal skills, like a former employer.
*NOTE: Applicants are not required to submit GRE or MAT scores.
Prerequisite coursework
An undergraduate major in communication disorders is preferred but not required. However, the following prerequisites are required before beginning the MS-SLP program. For full consideration, all prerequisites should be completed with a minimum grade of B-.

In addition to these courses, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) requires that graduate students applying for ASHA certification have completed one biological science course, one physical science course, one social science course and one statistics course. Most students do so as part of their undergraduate degrees. Be sure to consult your department adviser about this requirement.

Program costs
Information about tuition can be found on the Enrollment Services website. In addition, students will be required to pay a professional fee during each fall, spring, and summer semester in which they are enrolled in CMD 570 (Clinical Practicum).
