We promote critical consciousness, cultural humility, and compassion, for a socially just and equitable campus community.

Mission

The Office of Community, Equity and Diversity leads institution-wide initiatives to anchor inclusion in every aspect of the University of Rhode Island’s community and operations.

Vision

Advancing inclusion by cultivating community, enhancing equity, and demonstrating diversity.

Core Values

  • Impact culture and climate by creating a welcoming community where each member can learn, work, and thrive.
  • Increase institutional capacity by hosting communities of practice that foster cultural competence and model constructive dialogue across difference.
  • Influence the orientation of the academic and administrative enterprise by advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our scholarship and research, pedagogy and practices.
  • Incorporate inclusion in university policies and procedures by identifying and removing artificial barriers that impede the land grant mission and mandate to support all learners
  • Iterate through coordinated and ongoing institution-wide assessment.

University Diversity Council

The University Diversity Council, comprised of undergraduate, graduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni representatives, advises the chief diversity officer on university-wide policies, procedures, and initiatives that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Accessibility Task Force

In alignment with our Focus URI 2023-2033 Strategic Plan to foster an inclusive, people-centered culture, URI created the Accessibility Task Force in Fall 2024. This cross-divisional task force provides an overarching structure to coordinate disability access and inclusion initiatives occurring across the University.
