Josie Chaves ‘19, Health and Physical Education
Josie Chaves graduated with a B.S. in kinesiology with a physical education/health education and adapted physical education (APE) specialization, from the Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Education and Professional Studies.
As a student, Chaves earned the Society of Health and Physical Education Major of the Year award, and the Academic Excellence Award from the Kinesiology Department in 2019 for her 4.0 GPA.
Chaves currently serves as the athletic director for Rogers High School in Newport, R.I., and coordinator of the Newport Basketball Association. She also volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County, where she develops basketball clinics and recreational activities related to youth basketball, and at the Viking Hoops Basketball Camp in Newport, where she serves as camp director in the summer.10 Under 10 Awards are given in recognition of outstanding professional achievement and dedication to the URI community. The awards highlight young leaders who embody the true spirit and values of the University. Award recipients must demonstrate excellence in the core values of the University: creativity and scholarship; diversity, fairness, and respect; engaged learning and civic involvement; and intellectual and ethical leadership. They must have completed an undergraduate degree at URI within 10 years of the nomination date.
