The Research

Peno, K., Mangiante, E. S. & Kenahan, R. (2026). Mentoring in formal and informal contexts. 2nd ed. Emerald Publishing.

Abstract

Mentoring in Formal and Informal Contexts addresses a gap in the academic literature by examining mentoring practice in different contexts. The book highlights practice and research in higher education of both faculty and students, K-12 teacher education (both general and special education), healthcare education and practice, and business.

Application in Process

Organizations and educational institutions can use the book as a guide for developing structured mentoring programs tailored to their specific contexts.

Faculty developers, school administrators, healthcare educators, and workplace trainers can use chapters from the book in workshops, graduate courses, or leadership training sessions to help mentors understand relationship building, feedback, skill development, reflective practice, and the progression from novice to expert.

I became interested in mentoring during my career as a banker and was able to dive into it as an academic. This collection of research-based strategies for mentoring in different contexts has allowed me to learn more deeply about mentoring and to develop a course (EDC 558) to help others engage in these strategies in their own work.
