4+1 Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s in Special Education

If you are accepted into the 4+1 program, you will:

  • Begin coursework your senior year in special education graduate studies to jump start your degree in special education.
  • Learn in a hybrid and online environment, balanced with face-to-face and online coursework designed to support working adults during your fifth year of your 4+1 program.
  • Make lasting connections with professors, peers, and alumni in an enriching, familiar environment, while learning the latest evidence-based practices in supporting youth with disabilities.
  • Be supported every step of the way, receiving guidance on meeting and maintaining program qualifications and preparing for your graduate experience.

Application Requirements

  1. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework. Unofficial transcripts are okay for admissions, but official transcripts will be required after one semester in the program, so please follow the prompts in GradCas on requesting official transcripts.
  2. Statement of Intent (three pages double-spaced maximum) detailing:
    • why you hold the dispositions to become a special education teacher committed to equity and justice
    • experiences that inspired your desire to work with youth with disabilities.
  3. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
  4. Current resume.
  5. Completed application form.
  6. Interview with a faculty member from the Special Education Program (happens after you submit your application online).

Summer- 5th Year

  • EDC 544: Reading Acquisition & Disability (3 cr)
  • EDS 503: Positive Behavior Supports (3 cr)

Fall Semester – 5th Year

  • EDS 523: Eligibility & Assessment in Special Education (3 cr)
  • EDC 566: Intervention (Reading Clinic- practicum) (3 cr)
  • EDS 575: Special Education Residency I (1 cr)

January Term – 5th Year

  • EDS 501: Co-Teaching & Collaboration (2 cr)
  • EDS 570: Middle Level Special Education Residency (1 cr)

Spring Semester – 5th Year

  • EDS 590: Capstone Research (2 cr)
  • EDS 524: Transition Planning for Students with Disabilities (2 cr)
