Environmental Education B.S.
Experiential Learning
The EE degree program is based in learning about and from experiential education. The following courses will actively engage the students in field work with the local environment and with the community. Every spring students will share newly acquired knowledge and skills at an annual EE community expo showcasing learned knowledge and skills through a variety of modalities, such as research posters, TEDtalks, and experiential teaching and learning presentations, all intended to develop awareness, sensitivity, knowledge, attitudes and participation in the community for helping the environment.
- ENE 101 (3 crs.): Place-Based Learning- Be ready to explore the variety of different spaces and places that can aid teaching and learning.
- ENE 332 (4 crs.): Environmental Education Teaching Methods- Students will make multiple observations of EE in action at facilities such as the Roger Williams Park Zoo, Mystic Aquarium, Save the Bay, Providence Parks after school program.
- ENE 310: (3 crs.): Program Development and Evaluation in Environmental Education- Prepare and execute programming and evaluations for the EE Community Expo. Students in the course will plan for, gather community members, facilitate, and evaluate a day in which the public is invited to URI to learn about recent efforts to improve environmental conditions.
- ENE 485 (3 crs.): Seminar- Students in senior seminar prepare and present a Capstone project using a variety of knowledge skills and resources to engage the community during the EE expo. Students will also prepare for transitions to the workforce or advanced degree programs.
- ENE 484 (3- 15 credits): Experience the work of a professional Environmental Educator, through this off-campus practicum experience. Students will participate in planning, delivering, and evaluating environmental education programs alongside an experienced educator from a selected environmental education agency.
Additionally students will be encouraged to take science courses that involve field work.
