Overview

Learning happens all around us–not exclusively in traditional school settings. This flexible degree teaches pedagogical development in varied community, industry, and organizational learning spaces. In this education degree program, you will develop essential skills and competencies for designing, evaluating, and implementing effective learning experiences in diverse, community-based settings. As a LEiA graduate, you will be prepared to foster effective learning across a range of settings using innovative and inclusive approaches to learning design.

The degree is flexible. You can choose from three structured focus areas or design your own pathway that aligns with your unique interests and career goals.

What you’ll learn

Through hands-on learning inside and outside the classroom you will:

  • Lead effective educational programming that are responsive to the needs of diverse communities
    • Apply effective teaching and learning strategies that leverage the unique affordances of different learning spaces while addressing the needs of diverse learners.  
    • Design and evaluate curricula and learning programs that address the unique needs of learners across various settings. 
  • Challenge societal systems and practices that create barriers to educational opportunities and success
    • Analyze educational and community practices and systems that create barriers and opportunities for diverse populations
    • Formulate action plans to address practices and systems that create barriers to educational opportunity through individual, community and policy strategies and interventions.

What can I do with this degree?

You can do so many different jobs with this degree. There is great demand for professionals who can design and deliver effective education for learners in a variety of settings–not only traditional elementary, middle and high school settings. As a student in the Learning and Education in Action (LEiA) program, you will be well prepared to develop, implement, and evaluate learning in varied community, industry, and organizational learning spaces. 

With a LEiA degree, you can work in a variety of settings where learning takes place! Just a few of the many examples include:

  • Industry/Corporate Settings (educational consultant, trainer, professional development coordinator, onboarding coordinator)
  • Non-profit organizations with educational aims/goals (e.g., community action programs, youth programs, historic sites, museums) that require curricular development and implementation
  • Non-profit organizations that provide direct educational curricula/programming to youth and adults (4H, Scouting, After school programs, Boys and Girls clubs, YMCAs, Outdoor education centers, camps)
