Maizie Dyess

Biography

Dr. Maizie Dyess is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Science Education in the College of Education at the University of Rhode Island. Her experiences as a science teacher in Alabama and Nevada have shaped her research on culturally responsive science teaching, the school-to-prison pipeline, behavior-focused alternative schools, and community cultural wealth. She is an advocate for citizen science and informal science learning, working to expand access to meaningful science experiences beyond the classroom. Through her work, Dr. Dyess examines how racially biased discipline practices shape science education while striving to center the experiences, assets, and voices of students.
