The New England Chapter of the American Public Works Association awarded scholarships to URI civil engineering students Logan Beattie and Carrie Ellis.

Beattie and Ellis, who are rising seniors, received the $2,500 Tim J. O’Leary Scholarships at the chapter’s annual awards luncheon.

“I am truly honored to receive this award,” said Beattie, who is from Tiverton.

Beattie has had an interest in protecting the environment from an early age. He is participating in the 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program under the direction of Colleen Suckling, assistant professor of sustainable aquaculture at URI.

Besides civil engineering, Ellis is also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Spanish through URI’s International Engineering Program. She’s minoring in environmental engineering and mathematics.

A native of Hatfield, Massachusetts, Ellis plays on the URI woman’s soccer team.
