M.A. in English
Curriculum
The Master of Arts in English degree requires the completion of 30 credits. Courses taken for program credit must be at the 500 and 600 level. MA students can take up to two (2) 400-level courses (with the exception of courses with catalogue language indicating “not for graduate credit”) toward their MA program requirements.
- 27 credits of coursework that include:
ENG 510/511: Introduction to Professional Study I and II; and
ENG 514: History of Critical Theories - 3 credits research
 
The curriculum is organized around three distinct groups of courses:
- Core courses in professional study and studies in critical theories
 - Coursework that reflects a balance of graduate seminars in a range of period and national literatures, film, and creative writing.
 - Masters research to develop a thesis or non-thesis portfolio.
 
Core Courses
- ENG 510: Introduction to Professional Study I (1.5 crs.)
Orientation to the major discourses, critical frameworks, and databases constituting graduate researching language and literary studies, including computer-assisted research methodologies. - ENG 511:Introduction to Professional Study II (1.5 cr.)
Orientation to the major discourses, critical frameworks, and databases constituting graduate researching language and literary studies, including computer-assisted research methodologies. Pre: ENG 510 - ENG 514:History of Critical Theories (3 crs.)
Historical survey of critical theory from antiquity to the present. - ENG 595: Master’s Project PRO (3 crs.)
Student produces MA portfolio in consultation with major professor and committee. - ENG 599: Master’s Thesis Research (3 crs.)
Student produces MA thesis in consultation with major professor and committee. 
Special Topics Courses
In addition to the graduate course offerings, we offer graduate seminars in a range of period and national literatures, film, and creative writing called “Special Topics.” Two “Special Topics” courses are offered each semester, designed to showcase the instructor’s current research and scholarship.
