Approval Round Information

Each approval round refers to the workflow sequence that each curricular proposal follows in Kuali. Rounds are structured around key academic dates, working backwards from the Faculty Senate Meetings. There are multiple rounds in an academic year, and as shown in the Approval Calendar, they do overlap.

One full round as shown in the calendar above consists of the following steps:

  • Temporary & Newly Proposed Course Email
The date which this email is scheduled to be sent
  • College Curriculum Committee Meetings
The dates provided are recommended. Ideally, the College Curriculum Committees would meet after receiving the Temporary & Newly Proposed Course Email to verify on behalf of their college that the courses listed do not have any content overlap with courses coming from other colleges.
  • College Dean Approval Deadline
Courses approved by the college deans or delegates by this date will be reviewed by the Faculty Senate Curriculum Committees in the following meeting.
  • Faculty Senate Curriculum Committee Meetings
The General Education Committee, Curriculum & Standards Committee, and Graduate Council will review curriculum proposals and prepare a report to be presented to the Faculty Senate in the next meeting.
  • Faculty Senate Meeting
Monthly on Thursdays during the Fall and Spring semester.

Not shown in the approval rounds:

  • Department-level reviews, such as the department curriculum committees (if applicable) and department chairs.
  • Approvals required after Faculty Senate action (e.g., URI President’s approval for all programs, and Board of Trustees’ approval for new majors and degrees)
