Curriculum

A total of 120 credits is required for graduation. At least 30 credits must be at the 300-level or above. A minimum 2.0 GPA overall and in the concentration is required.

Basic Sciences (12 credits minimum)

  • BIO 101/103: Principles of Biology I
  • BIO 102/104: Principles of Biology II
  • CHM 101/102: General Chemistry I (Lecture/Lab) or CHM 103/105: Introductory Chemistry (Lecture/Lab)

Pre-Professional Requirements (21 credits minimum)

These courses provide the essential framework for understanding food systems and human nutrition.

  • Introduction to Sustainable Food Systems — Choose one:
    • AFS/AVS/PLS 132G: Intro to Sustainable Agriculture, Food Systems, & Society
    • SAF 101G: Confronting Grand Challenges in Food Systems
  • Sustainability — Choose one:
    • SAF 305: Sustainability for the Common Good or similar course
  • HSS/PSY 130G: The Problem of Hunger in the US
  • Sustainable Production — Choose two:
    • AFS 105G/106: Food from the Sea
    • AVS 101/102: Introduction to Animal Science
    • PLS 150: Plants, People & the Planet
  • EEC 105: Introduction to Resource Economics
  • NUT 207: General Nutrition

Professional Concentration (30 credits minimum at 300-level or above)

Students specialize through advanced coursework in society, science, and management:

  • Food & Society — Choose one:
    • APG/GWS/SOC 308: Sustainable Agriculture & Food Cultures
    • SAF 383: Food Justice
  • NRS 212: Soil Science
  • Production Management — Choose at least three courses:
    • Aquatic (Finfish, Shellfish, Crustacean Aquaculture; Fisheries Science; World Fishing Methods)
    • Livestock (Pasture & Grazing Management; Ruminant or Non-Ruminant Management; Small Farm Management)
    • Crops (Fruit Culture; Hydroponic/Greenhouse Vegetables; Horticultural Plant Production; Vegetable Crops)
  • Internship or Special Project (3 credits)
  • Capstone (3 credits) — Choose one:
    • SAF 400G: Urban Agriculture: Policy, Planning, & Design
    • PLS 385: Agroecology & Global Food Systems
    • AFS 440: Aquatic Food Production in the Philippines

Supporting Electives (9 credits minimum at 300-level or above)

Students must select at least 9 credits from approved courses in AFS, APG, AVS, BIO, EEC, GWS, NRS, PSY, SAF, and SOC.
