1. How do I apply and what are the deadlines?
You must apply online and pay a non-refundable fee. Deadlines vary by program; international Fall admission deadlines typically are February 1, and Spring by July 15. Read more
2. Can I waive the application fee?
U.S. citizens and permanent residents may qualify for fee waivers if requested at least 10 business days before the deadline. International students are generally ineligible, except Fulbright scholars. Read more
3. What materials are required for the application?
Applicants must submit:
- Transcripts (official upon admission)
- At least 2 letters of recommendation
- Personal statement
International applicants must also submit TOEFL or equivalent proof of English proficiency.
4. Can I transfer credits or enroll as a non-matriculating student?
Yes—up to one-fifth of degree requirements may be transferred from other institutions, and up to two-fifths may include URI non-matriculate credits. Non-matriculating guests may take courses subject to admissions policies. Read more
5. Are assistantships and financial support available?
Assistantships (teaching/research) are offered—primarily to PhD students, and occasionally to master’s students depending on availability. Financial support is automatically considered during application. Read more
6. What is the expected timeline to complete a degree?
- Master’s (non-thesis): up to 5 years
- Doctoral: up to 7 years
Students must maintain continuous registration each semester. Leaves of absence require prior approval. Read more
7. How do I register for classes and access course schedules?
Registration takes place through e-Campus (PeopleSoft). Class schedules are posted there as well; new users must set up login credentials via e-Campus. Read more
8. What about health insurance for graduate students?
URI provides basic health insurance coverage for single graduate students at no additional cost. Family coverage is available but requires students to pay a fee. Read more
9. Where can I find all required forms and academic calendar info?
All graduate forms—such as petitions, leave requests, degree nomination, study abroad, etc.—are hosted on the URI Graduate School Forms page. The academic calendar is also available online. Read more
10. How can I check my application status?
