In this class we will examine human difference (race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation) and issues of social justice. We will explore our own cultural identities as well as those of others. Through class discussions, readings, and personal reflection, we will learn how differences are created and reinforced. We will attempt to understand ourselves and others in ways other than stereotyped groups or categories; develop an awareness of the causes and effects of structured inequalities and prejudicial exclusion; and work toward being more culturally competent in our daily interactions.
