The University Graduate Village Apartments is a community of multi-bedroom apartments used to house URI graduate students, non-traditional undergraduate students, visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, and their families. The apartment complex is located on Route 138 across from the entrance to the Boss Ice Arena and the Athletic Complex, and is a short walk from the center of campus. Residents have access to use our Community Center and our Community Garden.

Apartments are unfurnished, but stoves, ovens and refrigerators are included in the kitchens. Rents do not include a utility assessment for internet and electricity. Cable and phone services are not included, but can be set up through a local provider.

To live in the University Graduate Village Apartments, you must be either an Agreement Holder or the Roommate of an Agreement Holder.

Agreement Holders must be:

  • a matriculating graduate student of full-time status; or
  • a graduate student enrolled for 1 dissertation credit; or
  • a visiting scholar; or
  • a postdoctoral fellow; or
  • a matriculating non-traditional undergraduate student of full-time status, as approved by HRL.

Note: You are considered a full-time graduate student if you are enrolled for a minimum of 9 credits per semester or enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits per semester with a full-time assistantship. You are considered a full-time undergraduate student if you are enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

The Agreement Holder is responsible for all financial obligations (the security deposit, the monthly rent, the monthly utility assessment, any damages to the apartment, etc.). Agreement Holders who seek to have roommates with whom they can share the cost of the apartment are solely responsible for identifying and securing eligible roommates. Additionally, Agreement Holders (and Roommates) are responsible for following the policies in the University of Rhode Island Student Handbook, the University Graduate Village Apartments Agreement, the Housing and Residential Life Agreement, and the Housing and Residential Life Community Policies Addendum.

To apply to be an Agreement Holder in the University Graduate Village Apartments, please complete this form to be added to our waitlist.

Apply Today

You may apply to be an Agreement Holder any time after you have been accepted to the university. There is no application fee to get on the University Graduate Village Apartments Waitlist, and there is no penalty for removing yourself from the waitlist if you find alternate housing. Due to high demand for these apartments, the waiting period can be 6 months or more during peak demand times. We cannot guarantee that an apartment will become available for you by a specific date.

Roommates of an Agreement Holder must be:

  • an immediate family member of the agreement holder; or
  • a matriculating graduate student enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits per semester; or
  • otherwise meeting one of the agreement holder eligibility requirements.

Note: If you cannot register for classes, a letter from your department stating that you meet the eligibility requirements will suffice.

To inquire about becoming the Roommate of an Agreement Holder, you may post and view ads on the University of Rhode Island URI Graduate Village Facebook page and the Graduate Student Association webpage. In addition, we recommend that you contact your department to see if they know of any graduate students who are looking for roommates. Selected stipulations regarding roommate arrangements / expectations will be included in the housing agreement.

For additional housing resources in the area, the Graduate Student Association has an online bulletin board where people post notices when they are looking for a place to rent, are looking for roommates, or are trying to rent a place that they own. You can view other people’s ads and post your own. The Commuter Affairs Office has a listing of apartments and houses for rent off campus. The Office of International Students and Scholars can answer questions about making the transition to URI. Disability, Access and Inclusion can assist students with disabilities who need housing accommodations.
