Biography

Ryan Chapman, Ph.D. began his career as an engineer by earning his undergraduate baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Following professional work in the sporting goods industry, he earned a Master’s degree from the University of Iowa in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on human motor performance and upper extremity biomechanics. After successfully re-tooling the University of Virginia Sports Performance (SPEED) lab, he joined the Dartmouth Biomedical Engineering Center (DBEC) at Dartmouth College as the resident biomechanics expert, earning his doctoral degree in biomedical engineering in 2018. He then spent 3 years as a lecturing faculty member at Dartmouth where his instructional responsibilities included Introduction to Engineering, Biomaterials, and Musculoskeletal Biomechanics. He joins the kinesiology faculty at URI as the Principal Investigator of the Biomechanics & Wearables Laboratory (BWL) where his research focus is monitoring the musculoskeletal biomechanics of humans both inside and out of the laboratory/clinic, before and after clinical intervention using a variety of techniques including optical motion capture, wearable sensors, and machine learning/artificial intelligence. His specific projects involve total joint replacement, rehabilitation, sports performance, ambulation in expectant mothers, and orthopaedic trauma.
