Mission and Goals
Mission
The Strength and Conditioning (S&C) concentration within the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Rhode Island prepares students to become evidence-based and effective strength and conditioning professionals. Through a combination of scientific coursework, applied coaching experience, and professional development, graduates are equipped to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and promote lifelong fitness across diverse athletic populations.
Goals
- Deliver an evidence-based and CASCE-aligned Scientific Curriculum: Provide students with foundational and advanced knowledge in exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and strength and conditioning principles aligned with CASCE standards.
- Develop Applied Coaching Competency: Ensure students gain hands-on experience through supervised fieldwork and internships in collegiate, high school, private, or tactical strength and conditioning settings.
- Prepare Students for Professional Certification: Prepare graduates to sit for the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam by aligning coursework and practicum experiences with exam competencies.
- Foster Evidence-Based Practice and Ethical Leadership: Encourage students to apply scientific research and ethical decision-making in designing and delivering strength and conditioning programs.
- Support Career Readiness and Professionalism: Build student competencies in communication, leadership, and professional behavior necessary for effective practice in the strength and conditioning profession
