Mission and Goals

Mission

The Strength and Conditioning (S&C) concentration within the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Rhode Island prepares students to become evidence-based and effective strength and conditioning professionals. Through a combination of scientific coursework, applied coaching experience, and professional development, graduates are equipped to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and promote lifelong fitness across diverse athletic populations.

Goals

  1. Deliver an evidence-based and CASCE-aligned Scientific Curriculum: Provide students with foundational and advanced knowledge in exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and strength and conditioning principles aligned with CASCE standards.
  2. Develop Applied Coaching Competency: Ensure students gain hands-on experience through supervised fieldwork and internships in collegiate, high school, private, or tactical strength and conditioning settings.
  3. Prepare Students for Professional Certification: Prepare graduates to sit for the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam by aligning coursework and practicum experiences with exam competencies.
  4. Foster Evidence-Based Practice and Ethical Leadership: Encourage students to apply scientific research and ethical decision-making in designing and delivering strength and conditioning programs.
  5. Support Career Readiness and Professionalism: Build student competencies in communication, leadership, and professional behavior necessary for effective practice in the strength and conditioning profession
