B.A. in German
Curriculum
The program for German majors takes four years, starting with general courses that build your language proficiency and intercultural competence. Students will have frequent opportunities to fine-tune their skills before taking advantage of one of our many study abroad opportunities.
The requirement for a B.A in German is 30 credits (excluding 100-level courses). If you have no prior knowledge of German, your first course is German 101 or 111 (GER 111 is the same as GER 101 but provides extra practice). Students typically take the following sequence of courses:
Year 1
- GER 101: Beginning German I, or
- GER 111: Beginning German I+,
followed by
- GER 102: Beginning German II, or
- GER 112: Beginning German II+
Students are encouraged to take GER 161: Science, Technology, and Culture during January faculty-led J-Term. We will travel to Germany to visit various cities and companies as well as our partner universities, and you will also have plenty of free time to explore. No German required.
Year 2
- GER 203: Intermediate German I, or
- GER 213: Intermediate German I+, and GER 204
followed by
- Intermediate German II or
- GER 214: Intermediate German II+
Students in our dual degree Signature Programs (IEP, IBP, ISD) are encouraged to add the optional 1-credit courses GER 251: German For Professional Use I, and GER 252: German For Professional Use II at this level.
The optional 1-credit grammar and conversation courses GER 221 and GER 222 are recommended at this level.
Year 3
- GER 301: German through Media: Literary Encounters
- GER 302: German through Media: TV Shows, News & Debates
Students in our dual degree Signature Programs (IEP, IBP, ISD) are encouraged to add the optional 1-credit courses GER 351: Studying and Working Abroad I, and GER 352: Studying and Working Abroad II at this level.
The optional 1-credit grammar and conversation courses GER 321 and GER 322 are recommended at this level.
Year 4
After completion of at least one of the 300 level German Studies courses GER 331 and 332 (German major are encouraged to take both), students are eligible to take 400 level courses: GER 431, GER 432: Special Studies (topics change every semester), GER 441: The German Language Past and Present, GER 452: Business German.
At any point during their undergraduate studies, students can accelerate their path to proficiency in German (and to meeting the graduation requirements) by taking summer courses in our Berlin Immersion School or through our partner universities.
Minor in German
The requirement for a minor is 18 credits, 12 of which must be at the 200-level or above.
Double Major and Dual Degree Programs
We encourage all German majors to consider minoring or majoring in another field. Students may combine German with any other course of study offered at the University, such as another liberal arts field, one of the sciences, business, or engineering.
