URI Chinese Scholars really stand out in competitive national scholarships. You can receive guidance from the Office of National Fellowships on funding for your study abroad experience. The office hosts information sessions during the course of the year to help you manage the process, from the planning and application, through the award stages. Internal Scholarships

Chinese Studies Scholarship

The Chinese Studies Scholarship provides up to $200 for current undergraduates studying Chinese in either domestic or international immersion programs.

Hasbro Scholars for China

Deadline: April
The Hasbro Scholars for China program is for students in the International Business and International Engineering Programs.

Luke Foundation Chinese Studies Scholarship

Deadline: April
The Chinese Studies Scholarship program is for students pursuing a B.A. or Minor in Chinese for a domestic immersion or overseas study/internship abroad experience.

William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund

Deadline: April
The William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund provides grants for undergraduate and graduate students for international study related to their academic area(s) of interest. To qualify for this grant, applicants must be engaged in an intensive language experience that emphasizes in-depth experiential learning and/or scholarly research. This scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need. Awards will range from $500 to $2000.

National Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship ($5,000 or $7,000)

Deadlines: October and March
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students with Pell Grant eligibility who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Boren Scholarships

On-campus deadline: First week of January
First Draft/Priority Deadline: December
For students interested in languages deemed critical to national security. The Boren Scholarship award will cover the cost of a proposed study abroad program up to $20,000 per academic year or $10,000 per semester. Special summer opportunity for students in the STEM disciplines is also available. Boren scholars must commit to seeking employment with the national security community for one year upon graduation. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

This program offered by the U.S. Department of State, is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

Beatrice S. Demers Foreign Language Fellows Program ($1,000-25,000)

Deadline: January
The Demers fund provides for fellowships for Rhode Island residents AND anyone who is a student at a Rhode Island college or university who wishes to pursue foreign language study.  Preference will be given to applicants from the University of Rhode Island. The Office of National Fellowships holds information sessions for students interested in applying.

Freeman-Asia Scholarship for Study in Asia

The Freeman-Asisa Scholarship provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Open to U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents. Summer term applicants must not have spent more than four weeks in the proposed country of study within the last five years. Semester term applicants must not have spent more than six weeks in the proposed country of study within the last five years.

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships

The Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships
provides up to $10,000 for current undergraduates who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks. Multiple scholarships opportunities are available. U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible for funding.
