Zhejiang University (ZJU) is a comprehensive research university with approximately 44,000 students, located in the picturesque city of Hangzhou. The city of Hangzhou is located one hour southwest of Shanghai by bullet train. Many tourist and historic destinations are nearby: West Lake, the Six Harmonies Pagoda, the Temple of Souls Retreat (Lingyin Temple), the Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum, the China National Silk Museum, and the National Tea Museum. Hangzhou is best known for its silk and Longjing (Dragon Well) green tea.
Program Duration: One Semester or Full Academic Year

Eligibility Requirements

Any URI student in good standing may apply provided the following:

  • A minimum of 3 credits of Chinese at the 300 level or above
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Tuition and Expenses

The following are expenses included in the tuition:

  • Tuition and fees: URI in-state tuition and fees
  • Off-campus fee: $483
  • Administrative fee: $350
  • Insurance: $1,181*

The following are expenses not included in the tuition:

  • Room and board
  • Roundtrip airfare
  • Local public transportation
  • Travel in China (optional)
  • Repatriation insurance: approx. $10/mo.
  • Visa: $169
  • Misc. (books, internet fee, etc.)

*May be waived with proof of own insurance and completion of the waiver form.

Housing

URI students will be housed in the International College dormitory on the Yuquan Campus. The building has a common area, dining hall, laundry room and shared kitchen (with access to a common refrigerator and microwave). The International College has single and double dormitory style rooms on six floors. Each room contains a bed, desk, dresser, and AC/heating system, and its own bathroom. Bedding is provided and internet connection is available for a fee in each room.

It should be noted that students living on campus are to pay for housing promptly. A refundable accommodation deposit will be charged before check-in and the quota of free electricity is subject to change.

Facilties

The Yuquan campus has a number of athletics facilities, including soccer fields, basketball courts, a gymnasium with table tennis and badminton courts, and a weight room. There are several health clinics on campus, including one next door to the International Center, Sir Run Run Hospital (which is endorsed by the International College and is for more serious health issues), and Number Two Hospital (one of ZJUs research hospitals).

Meals

Meals are estimated at about $5 per day. The International College at Zhejiang Unversity houses a counter service dining hall located on the first floor of the building, where students and faculty can choose from a wide variety of typical Chinese dishes. There are several other school cafeterias located on the Yuquan campus, as well as many restaurants located just outside the campus gate and within a short walk from campus.

Courses Available

Zhejiang University offers coursework in a wide variety of majors and also offers a full intensive Chinese language program for foreign students. Chinese language and culture courses are offered at the Yuquan campus through the International Center, depending on your Chinese language level. The language courses that are required will be set up by ZJU and you therefore do not need to register for them yourself.

Part way through the semester you can choose to enroll in Chinese cultural courses, such as Tai Chi, Chinese Calligraphy, Gong-fu, Business Chinese Conversation, Chinese Painting, etc. There are also hundreds of other courses offered, including those in field of art, tea science, cryogenics, and medicine.
