MAF students awarded prestigious NOAA Hollings Scholarship

Four University of Rhode Island sophomores, including two Marine Affairs majors, have been awarded the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the most prestigious scholarship awarded to undergraduates studying the marine sciences.

URI Sends Three Grads to D.C. for Sea Grant Knauss Fellowships

Three URI grads, including Kimberly Ohnemus (MAMA ’20) and Clea Harrelson (MAMA ’20), have been named John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellows. They will join 74 other finalists to spend a year in Washington, D.C., working on ocean and coastal policy issues beginning this month.

MAF Grad Student Lennie Day promoted to Lieutenant Commander, US Coast Guard

LCDR Day will graduate with his Masters in Marine Affairs in May 2021, and return to the Coast Guard with a new role.

The URI Marine Affairs Department welcomes new Assistant Professor, Dr. Lisa Hiwasaki.  Dr. Hiwasaki is an interdisciplinary social scientist who studies vulnerability and resilience of marginalized communities in the global South.

Biden selects MAF alum Dr. Karen Hyun for NOAA political team

The Biden administration appointed a new political team to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that will help guide policies on the oceans and atmosphere. Dr. Karen Hyun, who earned a PhD in Marine Affairs from URI, will serve as chief of staff.
