Over fifty antioxidant compounds were recently found in a Canadian maple syrup sample. Researchers found that some of these compounds were able to prevent tumor growth by halting cancer cells from undergoing cell division. The antioxidant compounds called “gallotannins” were studied for their benefits and how they might affect cancer. The study found that among many gallotannins, certain ones were able to stop both the forming of new cancer cells and the growth of already existing cancer cells.. Compared to the normal cells in the study, the cancer cells were more sensitive to the compounds. This finding is a hopeful first step in seeing if maple compounds may help prevent cancer in breast and colon cancers.
