How can science communication increase a sense of belonging for underrepresented people in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields? What are the most effective strategies for dismantling biases and systemic barriers to inclusive science engagement? How can researchers and communicators work together to build evidence-based techniques for equitable public engagement?
The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute is thrilled to announce the second #InclusiveSciComm Symposium, September 27-29, 2019, in Kingston, Rhode Island, to explore these issues in science communication. Communication practitioners, trainers, researchers and educators from across the country will discuss effective approaches to making science communication equitable and intersectional.
“There is an urgent need for inclusive approaches to science communication that acknowledge and respect a variety of perspectives and contributions,” said Sunshine Menezes, Metcalf Institute executive director and faculty member in URI’s College of the Environment and Life Sciences. “The planning committee is excited to build on the enthusiasm and momentum from our inaugural conference and develop the shared knowledge, resources, and support to build a thriving community of inclusive science communication practice and scholarship.”

- Changing systems and structures with inclusive scicomm
- Social responsibility and ethics in inclusive scicomm
The symposium will feature keynotes, panels, a poster session, and workshops to develop skills, review lessons learned, explore integration of research and practice, and discuss methods for facilitating challenging conversations across difference.
Who Should Attend?
The symposium is designed to benefit a wide range of attendees: science communication practitioners; trainers, and scholars from non-profit, public, and private sectors; informal science educational professionals, graduate students, journalists and funders.
